Your company may call it Top Contributor, Top Performer, Top Seller, Top Talent, Top Employee, or another similar name, but the definition is the same for our discussion. The Top Contributor is the employee who always excels at his/her job, exceeds expectations and business metrics, and outperforms his/her colleagues by making the highest contributions to the company for the year.
Most employees wish to become The Top Contributor, as this title is the key to performance bonuses, salary increases, and promotions. Unfortunately, not many employees get the pleasure to sit on this throne. Why is that? You may ask. Is it lack of skills or education? Lack of friends in high company positions? Or maybe the bad hair days you had during the entire summer?
The truth is that most employees who do not achieve this title do not clearly know the reasons why they could not get it. Some clearly worked hard all year long; got to work on time every morning; completed projects by their deadline, and finished every task they were asked to. So, why did they not get to be The Top Contributor?
Why did you not get to be The Top Contributor last year? Why did you not get the Salary increase you wanted? Or what about the bonus you needed to take that vacation to Europe? Why did you not get it? Do you know?
I’m very sorry to be the one who breaks it down to you, but working hard is NOT enough! There are many factors, which will affect your manager’s decision to grant you this title, and that you should be aware of to achieve your goal. For years, I struggled to figure out what I needed to do to become The Top Contributor, but I had very little luck and ended up just getting average results.
Fortunately, I did not stop there and started a quest to talk to executives, managers, and engineers, in very distinguished positions of corporate America, to figure out what I needed to do to solve this dilemma. With their advice, I put together a series of steps and developed a systematic approach that eventually helped me become The Top Contributor in my field. This approach has worked for me every time, and now I’m thrilled to share it with you.
