Positive Thinking Exercise

Negative thoughts and negative self-talk can be our enemies at work. All that energy you use to put yourself down will simply diminish your chances to achieve your goals. If you catch yourself frequently saying things, such as:

- I’ll never finish this project on time.
- I’m so stupid. My boss will never take me seriously.
- I’m just not as smart as Joe is. He will surely get that promotion I want.

Then, you need to think about ways to avoid those thoughts and concentrate on the positive things about your job and on how to change those things that you do not like. The hard part about this is that you may be so used to putting yourself down, that you may not even notice your constant negative attitude and self blame.

Here’s a trick to keep track of your negative self-talk. Place 4 quarters in your right pocket. Every time you have a negative thought, take a quarter and move it to your left pocket. Then, once you get four quarters in your left pocket, place them in a jar and start the process again.

Seeing your negative self-talk as something tangible that you can touch and count in the jar, will give you a new perspective in the way you talk to yourself. Replacing those negative thoughts with positive ones, and encouraging yourself to do better each time will take you far, and will make you a very successful individual.
