10,000 Hours

The other day I was watching The Latino List on HBO, where multiple successful and famous Latinos, such as Supreme Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor, were talking about how they made it.

One comment especially made an impression on me, and that was how John Leguizamo says he encourages his kids to achieve their dreams. He tells them that if they want something, they just need to put 10,000 work hours on it. He promises them that if after 10,000 hours they do not get what they want, he will pay them for that time.

Yes, you may not have someone who will guarantee to reimburse you after you invest 10,000 hours on a project, but can you imagine how much you can do in 10,000 hours? Think about it! Whether your goal is a promotion, learn how to speak French and visit Paris, or simply learn how to cook pasta without burning it, you can be sure that if 10,000 hours is not enough, it will get you very close to your dreams.

So, I say it’s time to start counting. Open a spreadsheet and start logging your goals, and your credit towards those 10,000 hours for each one.
